NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. – University of Massachusetts baseball fell behind early and dropped its mid-week contest to Boston College, 13-1 at the New England Baseball Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The loss leaves the Minutemen at 6-10 on the year, while the Eagles improve to 13-1.
After sending UMass down in order, BC struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Jake Alu sent a two-out bases loaded double to the fence in right that plated Casey Donovan and Johnny Adams.
The Eagles then broke the game open with a five-run third, which included a leadoff home run by Donovan and a two-run shot off the bat of Gian Martellini. Anthony Maselli capped the scoring in the frame with by driving in a pair with a double.
Boston College went on to score three more in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the eighth, finishing the day with 11 hits.
The Minutemen's lone run of the contest came in the top the sixth, a one-out homer to right by senior Mike Geannelis, his first of the season. Senior Jon Avallone and sophomore Ryan Lever provided the only other hits on the day for UMass, a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth, respectively.
Sophomore Connor Donahue started for the Minutemen and took the loss (0-2) as he allowed seven runs on five hits with four walks and six strikeouts over three innings. Jack Nelson picked up the win (2-0) for the Eagles, not allowing a hit over four shutout innings with four walks and three strikeouts.
UMass will be back in action on Friday, March 31, when the squad will open a three-game series at Morehead State at 5 p.m.
