Second Half Pair Leads Field Hockey Over VCU, 4-2

October 06, 2017 | Field Hockey

Lecrone tallies four saves in win.

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts field hockey used second half goals by Georgie McTear and Nicole Kuerzi to down VCU, 4-2, on Friday at the Gladchuk Field Hockey Complex.

With the win, the Maroon and White improve to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the Atlantic 10. VCU drops to 8-4 and an even 2-2 against league foes.

Goalkeeper Camille Lecrone earned her first collegiate win after making four saves, while her counterpart, Chessa Kownurko, had six stops.

A back-and-forth first half saw each team net a pair, sending the sides into halftime with the score even at 2-2. VCU opened the scoring in the 14th minute via Lauren Kaup, taking a lead pass from Spencer Tossone and putting a shot past a diving Lecrone.

UMass then buried two strikes, beginning with Lucy Cooper's goal late in the 30th minute. After dribbling into the right side of the circle, Nicole Kuerzi dished a centering pass to Cooper who ripped a shot through Kownurko. Two minutes later, Anne Dijkstra sent an attempt of her own from the top left of the circle into the cage.

Sandwiched between the tallies was a VCU penalty stroke goal. Awarded after the ball was illegally touched by a UMass player in front of the cage, Natalie Bohmke stepped to the penalty spot and lofted the ball home.

The scoring in the second half began with a UMass penalty corner in the 39th minute. Inserted by Cooper and set up by Mirra Stillman, McTear blasted a shot through traffic, notching what proved to be the game-winning goal.

Kuerzi then added some insurance as the match approached its final stages. Stillman placed a centering pass in the middle of the circle from near the left sideline, received by Kuerzi and hammered to move the score to 4-2 for the balance of the afternoon.

Massachusetts outshot the Rams by an 18-10 margin on the day and also edged the visitors in penalty corners, 3-2.

The Minutewomen return to the pitch on Sun., Oct. 8 in a 1 p.m. match at Providence.
