Crawford Caps Impressive Run At ITA Northeast Regionals

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts tennis junior Ruth Crawford bowed out of ITA Northeast Regional Championships singles competition Sunday, ending an impressive run where the Atlanta, Georgia, native advanced through to the quarterfinal round of play. Crawford was only the second Minutewoman to earn her way in the ITA Northeast Regional Championships quarterfinals.

"I am proud of the focus we had each day during a long and grueling tournament," head coach Juancarlos Nunez said. "This week, we set a new standard for the program - establishing ourselves with the best in our refion. We're excited to keep building this momentum."

Crawford met No. 1 seeded Gabriela Knutson (Syracuse) during Sunday's action and fell 6-0, 6-2 to the 2015-16 ITA Northeast Region Rookie of the Year and the No. 68-ranked competitor in the country during 2016-17. Crawford joins Magdalena Ploch as the only Minutewomen to reach the quarterfinal round of the singles bracket at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships.

Including Ana Yrazusta and Laura Moreno's appearance in the doubles quarterfinal round on Saturday, 2017-18 marked the first season Massachusetts had singles and doubles entries advance to the quarterfinal round.
