Tennis Continues Strong Showing At ITA Regional Championships

PHILADELPHIA - University of Massachusetts tennis junior Ruth Crawford continued her strong play at the ITA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday with a victory in the third round while doubles partners Ana Yrazusta and Laura Moreno won their third round match before they bowed out in the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket.

Crawford took on Connecticut's top player, Yelyzaveta Pletnyeva, in the Round of 16. Pletnyeva won the first set before Crawford bounced back with victories in sets two and three for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 triumph. With the win, Crawford moves to the quarterfinals and becomes just the second Minutewoman to advance as far in program history.

During doubles play, Yrazusta and Moreno met Drexel's Ghita Benhadi and Kendra Bunch, the No. 9 seeded pair. Yrazusta and Moreno battled back and forth before the Maroon and White duo prevailed 8-7 (6). With the victory, Yrazusta and Moreno advanced to the quarterfinals, where they fell later in the day to No. 4 seeded Kristina Mathis and Racquel Lyn from Dartmouth, 8-5. Yrazusta and Moreno were the first Minutewomen pair to reach the quarterfinal round of the ITA Northeast Regional Championships doubles bracket.
