Senior Sam Breen named to Preseason All-Conference First Team
AMHERST, Mass. – As the 2020-21 college basketball season continues to approach, the Massachusetts women's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the conference on Monday, as announced by the Atlantic 10. The league also announced that senior guard Sam Breen was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference Team.
Breen, who was named a team captain by head coach Tory Verdi last week, was an Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team selection in 2019-20 after appearing in 20 games last season. Despite sitting out the Fall semester due to NCAA transfer rules, the Gibsonia, Pa. native averaged a team-high 16.9 points and 9.2 rebounds over 32.7 minutes per night, and her eight double-doubles ranked second in the Atlantic 10. She was also tied for fifth in the league with as many 20-point efforts.
She became the first UMass player since at least 1997-98 to contribute 20-plus points in her first five starts, and shot 43% from the floor including 37% on three-pointers. Breen enters the 2020-21 campaign with two seasons of eligibility remaining after receiving a waiver from the NCAA in the offseason.
VCU was picked to win the Atlantic 10 with 185 poll points, including 10 first place-votes, followed closed by Dayton at 176 poll points (two first-place votes). Saint Louis, which received one first-place vote, was slated at third (171 points) before a three-way tie for fourth between Davidson, Duquesne (one first-place vote) and Fordham all with 140 poll points right ahead of the Minutewomen (118 points).
The 2020-21 women's basketball season tips off on Wednesday, Nov. 25. The season will culminate with the Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball Championship, which will be played on campus at VCU's Siegel Center March 3-7, 2021.
