Luwane Pipkins reaches 1,000 career points in A-10 second round loss.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Fifth-seeded George Mason used a strong performance on the offensive glass and converted seven-of-eight free throws in the final two minutes of play to knock the No. 13 seed University of Massachusetts out of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Championship tournament. The Minutemen defeated La Salle on Wednesday in the first round before falling on Thursday in the second round at Capital One Arena. The loss ends the year for UMass which posted a 13-20 overall record in head coach Matt McCall's first season at the helm.

Luwane Pipkins reached a pair of milestones in the game after a 31-point performance that included five three-pointers. The effort made him the 51st player in program history to reach 1,000 points while his performance beyond the arc set a single-season UMass record with 107 made three pointers this year. Pipkins will enter his junior year with 1,015 career points and is tied for 8th all-time for career three pointers with 178 through 65 games. His 21.2 point per game average made him the sixth player all-time at UMass to average over 20 points for a season while his 678 points this year were the third most behind Julius Erving and Gary Forbes.

Along with Pipkins efforts, UMass was led by Carl Pierre who had 17 points and C.J. Anderson who had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists.

George Mason was led by 21 points from Otis Livingston II who had 21 points, while Goanar Mar who had 16 points. AJ Wilson and Javon Greene each had 11 points to round out the top scorers.

The Minutemen came out firing in the first half building as much as a 14-point lead after a Randall West lay-up with 9:42 remaining giving UMass a 26-12 lead.

A Pierre three-pointer kept UMass ahead double-figures, but the Patriots closed the half on a 16-to-4 run to tie the game 39-39 at halftime.

The second half saw the Minutemen come out firing to push the lead back to eight, 53-45, after a three-pointer by Pipkins with 13:19 to go. The Patriots chipped away at the lead and the two teams traded baskets. George Mason went up by three points, 76-73, with 28 seconds to go, but a tip-in by Hines with six seconds made it a one-point game. After two free throws by Mar pushed the lead back to three, Pipkins was called for an offensive foul on the ensuing possession effectively sealing the win for the Patriots.
