AMHERST, Mass. –
University of Massachusetts hockey sophomore goaltender Matt Murray
has been selected as the Hockey East Stop It Goaltending Goaltender of the Month, the league office announced on Monday. This marks the second monthly award for the Minutemen this season and the first for Murray, a previous Hockey East Rookie of the Week, Defensive Player of the Week and two-time Hockey East Player of the Week in his career.
Murray started six of seven games for UMass in November and posted a 6-0-0 record with a 2.15 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage to help the Minutemen to their first undefeated month at 7-0-0 since Dec. 1970, which included three wins over ranked teams and a 5-0-0 record in league action.
The St. Albert, Alberta native was named Hockey East Player of the Week on Nov. 11 after a weekend sweep of Providence where he made 58 saves over the pair of victories and picked up his first career assist in a 3-2 win over No. 18 Princeton.
The first goaltender in program history to begin a season 9-0-0, Murray currently holds a 1.99 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage, helping the squad to the No. 1 ranking in the nation for the first time ever.
A top-10 matchup awaits UMass this weekend as the No. 1 Minutemen will play No. 8 Quinnipiac in a home-and-home, beginning in Hamden, Connecticut on Friday night, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m.
