AMHERST, Mass. –
University of Massachusetts hockey freshman goaltender Filip Lindberg
has been named to Finland's roster for its pre-tournament camp for the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, The Finnish Ice Hockey Association announced on Monday. The pre-tournament camp will begin in Vancouver on Dec. 15 with the final World Junior roster being announced on Dec. 24.
Lindberg has appeared in four games thus far as a freshman for the Minutemen this season and holds a 1.73 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage over 242 minutes in net. He has posted wins at Rensselaer (3-1), at Merrimack (4-3, OT), and at Holy Cross (3-1) with his one setback coming on the road against then-ranked No. 1 Ohio State where he made a season-high 36 saves.
Finland will play exhibition matchups against Denmark and Canada on Dec. 19 and 23 during the pre-tournament camp. The 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship, held in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia, will begin on Dec. 26 and runs through Jan. 5.
Current sophomores Cale Makar
and Mario Ferraro
were the most recent Minutemen to earn World Junior camp invitations, both attending Canada's camp last December. Makar made the final roster and went on to win Gold with Team Canada at the 2018 World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York. Past WJC participants from UMass include William Lagesson
(2016, Sweden) and Stephen Werner (2004, USA).
