Second Half Run Leads Fordham Past Men's Hoops 82-69

Unique McLean posts first career double-double in loss.

BRONX, N.Y. - Unique McLean recorded his first career double-double and four Minutemen reached double figures, but a second half surge led Fordham past the UMass men's basketball team 82-69 on Saturday afternoon at Rose Hill Gymnasium. UMass led at halftime, but the Rams used a 19-to-2 run after the break to pick up the league win.

McLean had 14 points and 12 rebounds in the game - both career highs along with five assists. Luwane Pipkins led UMass (10-12, 3-6 A-10) with 18 points and five rebounds, while Carl Pierre notched 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Malik Hines posted 10 points and seven rebounds for his second straight game in double figures.

The Rams (7-14, 2-7 A-10) saw five players reach double figures, while Joseph Chartouny (16 points, 13 assists) and Prokop Slanina (19 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles. Ivan Raut notched 16 points, while Will Tavares (14 points) and David Pekarek (12 points) rounded out the top performers.

The Minutemen started the game well leading by as many as 10 points in the first half. A jumper by C.J. Anderson at the 8:39 mark put UMass up 23-13. Pierre led the strong start with 14 of his 17 points in the game hitting 6-of-8 from the floor.

After leading at halftime, 34-31, UMass stretched the lead to seven after a three-pointer from Pierre to start the second half. However, a 19-to-2 run for Fordham swung the momentum giving the Rams a 50-40 lead with 11:44 left in the game.

Pipkins scored seven straight points for UMass to cut the lead down to five, 52-47, but the Minutemen could not close the gap past that. Just over five minutes after that, Fordham saw Pekarek and Chartouny hit back-to-back three-pointers pushing the lead to 13, 72-59, with 4:23 to go.

The Minutemen shot 28-of-69 (40.6%) from the field and out-rebounded Fordham 38-to-32. The Rams hit 29-of-52 (55.8%) from the floor including 12-of-25 (48%) from beyond the arc.

UMass will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 30 to host No. 23 Rhode Island at 6:30 PM. The game will be televised nationally on the CBS Sports Network.
