RICHMOND, Va. –
University of Massachusetts men's basketball sophomore center Rashaan Holloway
earned his second consecutive and career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds but the Minutemen were undone by VCU's steady offense and on-target perimeter shooting in an 81-64 loss. C.J. Anderson
added 12 points with four assists at the Siegel Center on Saturday.
VCU vaulted itself in front with a nine-point run in the first half as the Rams earned a 33-29 lead at the break. The Minutemen went into halftime with momentum; however, as Jarreau raced the length of the court in the final seven seconds and sank a right side layup that rattled around the rim before it fell through after time expired.
Holloway used that momentum and scored the opening eight UMass points of the half through a mixture of paint touches and free throw makes. Alone, Holloway outscored VCU, 8-5 and brought UMass back within 38-37 at the 17:31 mark with a thunderous dunk that capped his scoring spree.
Holloway, the 6-foot-11 center from Elmer, New Jersey, was unable to offset VCU's offense throughout the half as the Rams shot 48.5 percent from the floor in the second half – including 55.6 percent from beyond the arc – and eventually pushed ahead by as much as 19.
