UMass Basketball Sprints Past Rider, 78-67

Clark scores 1,000th career point, leads Minutemen to Gotham Classic victory

AMHERST, Mass. – University of Massachusetts men's basketball junior guard Donte Clark registered his 1,000th career point and paced the Minutemen to a 78-67 victory over Rider with 27 points, eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. The win cemented a perfect Gotham Classic run for the Minutemen, who ended play in the tournament with four wins in as many games and now sport a 9-3 record on the year. The loss dropped the Broncs to 8-4.

After he entered the night in need of 18 points for 1,000 on his career, Clark surpassed the milestone on an acrobatic, two-handed slam with 14 minutes, 28 seconds still to play. Luwane Pipkins created the play when he found Clark with a no-look, behind-the-back bounce pass during a two-on-one breakaway.

Clark is the 50th member of the team's 1,000-Point Club. His 1,009 career points places him 49th in Minuteman history on the all-time points list.

Rashaan Holloway also reached double-figures for the Maroon and White as the 6-foot-11 center scored 16, collected five boards and turned aside three Rider shots. It marked Holloway's sixth game with at least 10 points scored on the season and fourth in the last five played.

Stevie Jordan had 15 points for the Broncs while Norville Carey added 12 and Xavier Lundy chipped in 10. Khalil Thomas finished just shy of a double-double on nine points and as many rebounds.

The Broncs led for the majority of the first half and entered the break with a two-point lead; however, the Minutemen honed their accuracy in the second half and finished 14-of-25 on field goals (56.0 percent) and 10-for-13 at the foul line (76.9 percent) after the break for the win.

The Minutemen surged ahead for good with 5:22 still to play on Clark's ninth and final made field goal – a fastbreak layup on a feed from DeJon Jarreau. The play marked the early stages of a game-sealing 16-2 run that turned the two-point advantage into an insurmountable 78-66 lead with 65 seconds to play.

The Minutemen wrap up non-conference action via a Wed., Dec. 28 contest at Georgia State at 2 p.m. Ticket information is available through 866-UMASS-TIX, the Mullins Center Box Office (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and online via the UMass Ticket Central.
